Luke the Physician
The 'beloved physician' and historian of the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts — who remained alone by Paul's side in his final Roman dungeon and requested that Timothy bring the restored John Mark.
Author of the two-volume history Luke–Acts addressed to Theophilus (Luke 1:1–4; Acts 1:1), Luke recorded both Saul's midnight basket escape in Damascus (Acts 9:25) and the painful split between Paul and Barnabas over John Mark (Acts 15:36–41). Years later, when everyone else had departed or been sent on mission during Paul's final Roman imprisonment, Paul wrote: 'Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry' (2 Timothy 4:11).
