Rahab
The Canaanite woman of Jericho who hid Israel's spies under stalks of flax, hung the scarlet cord from her window in the city wall, and was grafted into the Messianic line as mother of Boaz.
Living inside the doomed outer wall of Jericho, Rahab heard how the LORD had dried up the Red Sea and confessed before any wall fell: 'The LORD your God, He is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath' (Joshua 2:11). Risking execution by Jericho's king, she hid the two Israelite spies on her roof and tied a scarlet cord in her window so her entire father's household was spared when the walls collapsed (Joshua 2:18–21; Joshua 6:22–25).
Welcomed into the covenant community of Israel, she married Salmon of Judah and became mother of Boaz, great-great-grandmother of King David, and one of the four Old Testament women honored by name in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5; Hebrews 11:31; James 2:25).
