Stephen the Martyr
First of the seven spirit-filled deacons in Jerusalem and the first Christian martyr — who saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God and prayed for his executioners while young Saul of Tarsus guarded their cloaks.
Chosen in Acts 6:5 as 'a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,' Stephen performed great wonders and spoke with wisdom the Sanhedrin could not withstand. Dragged outside Jerusalem and stoned while witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul, Stephen gazed into heaven, saw the Son of Man standing at God's right hand, and cried, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them' — a prayer answered on the Damascus road when Saul himself was converted (Acts 7:54–60; Acts 9:1–6).
