The Pharisees
The rigid religious traditionalists in Luke 5 who grumbled outside Levi's banquet demanding why Jesus' disciples feasted instead of fasting — pictured by Christ as sun-hardened old wineskins that burst under the pressure of new wine.
Standing outside Levi's house in Capernaum while tax collectors and forgiven sinners rejoiced inside with Jesus, the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at the disciples and demanded why they were not following traditional fasting routines (Luke 5:30–33).
Jesus answered them with the parable of the patch and the wineskins: no one pours fermenting new wine into brittle, sun-hardened old wineskins, or the new wine will burst the skins — warning that rigid, self-righteous religion always says, 'The old is good' and refuses to stretch for the living Spirit of God (Luke 5:36–39).
The Bursting Skins — The Pharisees' Rigidity, Fermenting New Wine & Supple Goatskin Vessels
Jesus warns that fermenting new wine will burst brittle old leather skins, calling us to become supple new vessels for the Spirit.
