Elimelech
Ephrathite of Bethlehem, husband of Naomi, and kinsman of Boaz who took his family to Moab during a famine in the days of the judges and died there — leaving the inheritance that Boaz later redeemed.
Whose name ironically means 'My God Is King' during the era when 'there was no king in Israel' (Judges 21:25), Elimelech left Bethlehem ('House of Bread') during a famine to sojourn in Moab with Naomi and his sons Mahlon and Chilion. After his death and the deaths of both sons, his family land in Bethlehem was redeemed at the city gate by his kinsman Boaz (Ruth 1:1–3; Ruth 4:3, 9).
