Son of Obed in Bethlehem (Ruth 4:22), Jesse presented his seven older sons before the prophet Samuel before summoning his youngest, David, from tending the sheep (1 Samuel 16:1–13). Isaiah prophesied that when the royal house looked like a felled tree, 'there shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse' — fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Root of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1, 10; Revelation 22:16).
