David
The shepherd boy who felled Goliath with a sling, hid with 400 outlaws in the Cave of Adullam, and became Israel's anointed warrior-king — "a man after God's own heart" whose line leads to Jesus.
The youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem, David was tending sheep when the prophet Samuel anointed him as Israel's next king (1 Samuel 16). Armed with faith, a sling, and five smooth stones, he refused King Saul's armor and struck down the Philistine champion Goliath in the Valley of Elah (1 Samuel 17).
His fame ignited Saul's jealousy. Bound to Crown Prince Jonathan by a covenant of loyal love, David fled for his life and took refuge in the Cave of Adullam, where everyone in distress, in debt, and bitter in soul gathered to him — the raw recruits God forged into his Mighty Men (1 Samuel 22; 2 Samuel 23).
Crowned king over Judah and then all Israel, David captured Jerusalem, brought the Ark home with dancing, and received God's covenant promise of an everlasting throne (2 Samuel 7). His fall with Bathsheba and his broken repentance (Psalm 51) show a king who ran back to God rather than away. Jesus is called "the Son of David" (Matthew 1:1).
