Joseph of Nazareth
Righteous carpenter of Nazareth and royal heir of David — who obeyed the angel of the Lord, took Mary as his wife, named the child Jesus, and conferred the legal throne right of David upon the Messiah.
A humble carpenter in Nazareth yet direct heir to David's royal throne (Matthew 1:16, 20; Matthew 13:55), Joseph was called 'a just man' who sought to shield Mary from disgrace until the angel of the Lord revealed that her child was conceived from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:19–21). Rising immediately from sleep, he took Mary into his home, traveled with her to Bethlehem, fled to Egypt by night to protect the Child from Herod, and raised Jesus in Nazareth (Matthew 1:24–25; Matthew 2:13–23).
