Martha of Bethany
Older sister of Lazarus and Mary in Bethany who confessed Jesus as 'the Christ, the Son of God,' warned of the four-day stench at the tomb, and helped unbind her resurrected brother.
Running out to meet Jesus on the road to Bethany after her brother Lazarus had been dead four days, Martha cried, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,' and made the towering Christological confession: 'Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world' (John 11:21–27). Though she hesitated at the cave entrance warning, 'Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days,' she saw the glory of God when Lazarus stepped forth and obeyed the command to strip away his grave clothes (John 11:39–44).
