The Gibeonites
The Amorite remnant bound to Israel by Joshua's 400-year-old covenant oath — whose unlawful slaughter by King Saul triggered a three-year famine in David's reign.
During the conquest of Canaan, the inhabitants of Gibeon used worn-out sacks and dry, moldy bread to secure a sworn peace treaty from Joshua and the leaders of Israel (Joshua 9:3–15). Four centuries later, King Saul broke that sacred oath in his zeal for Israel and Judah and sought to strike them down, bringing bloodguilt and a three-year famine upon the land until restitution was made and the Gibeonites blessed the inheritance of the LORD (2 Samuel 21:1–9).
