King Saul
Israel's tall first monarch who cowered before Goliath in heavy bronze armor, hurled his spear at David and Jonathan in jealous rage, and broke Israel's oath with the Gibeonites.
Chosen from the tribe of Benjamin and standing head and shoulders above every man in Israel (1 Samuel 9:2), Saul began with promise but allowed fear of people and spiritual compromise to hollow out his reign. In the Valley of Elah, he cowered in his tent for forty days before Goliath's taunts and tried to burden young David with his own suffocating bronze armor (1 Samuel 17:11, 38–39).
When the women of Israel sang of David's victory, insecurity poisoned Saul's court. He hurled his royal spear at both David and his own heir Jonathan, driving David into the Cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 18–22). In misguided zeal, Saul also slaughtered the Gibeonites in violation of Joshua's 400-year-old covenant oath, leaving a national bloodguilt that was only healed after Rizpah's six-month vigil on the rock of Gibeah (2 Samuel 21:1–14).
