The Lords of the Philistines
The five rulers of Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron who hot-potatoed the captured Ark of the Covenant from city to city in panic as plagues broke out everywhere they moved it — until sending it back to Israel on a new cart with golden guilt offerings.
When the heavy hand of the LORD struck Ashdod with tumors and panic after Dagon's fall, the five lords of the Philistines convened an emergency council and voted to move the Ark of the God of Israel to Gath, and then to Ekron — only for a deadly panic to erupt in every city until the cry of the city went up to heaven (1 Samuel 5:6–12). After seven months of devastation, they placed the Ark on a new cart hitched to two nursing cows with five golden tumors and five golden mice as a guilt offering, watching in awe as the cows walked straight up the road to Beth-shemesh (1 Samuel 6:1–16).
The Fallen Idol — The Fallen Idol
The captured Ark is placed beside Dagon in Ashdod — and twice the idol falls face down, the second time losing its head and hands.
