The Priests of Dagon
The pagan temple attendants in Ashdod who had to physically pick up and prop their fallen god back onto his pedestal — and who instead of repenting when Dagon's head and hands were severed, invented a superstitious rule never to step on the threshold.
Entering Dagon's sanctuary in Ashdod at dawn after locking the captured Ark of the LORD inside overnight, the priests of Dagon discovered their statue face down in the posture of worship before the Ark and 'took Dagon and put him back in his place' (1 Samuel 5:3). When the zweiten morning revealed Dagon's head and both hands severed on the doorway threshold, 'therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who enter the house of Dagon tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day' — monumentalizing their idol's defeat rather than bowing to the living God (1 Samuel 5:4–5).
The Fallen Idol — The Fallen Idol
The captured Ark is placed beside Dagon in Ashdod — and twice the idol falls face down, the second time losing its head and hands.
