The Roman Centurion at the Cross
The hardened Roman commander overseeing the crucifixion at Golgotha — whose soldiers drove the nails into the unspared Substitute, and who confessed at the earthquake and torn veil, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'
Stationed on the ridge of Golgotha to command the execution squad, this unnamed Roman centurion had overseen countless crucifixions. Yet standing directly facing Jesus (Mark 15:39), he watched a Prisoner who prayed for His executioners, heard Him cry out with a loud voice, and felt the rocks split as darkness covered the land.
Where the Angel of the LORD had stopped Abraham's knife over Isaac on the same mountain ridge two millennia earlier, no voice halted the Roman hammer from falling on the true Substitute — moving the Gentile executioner to become the first voice after Christ's death to proclaim, 'Truly this was the Son of God!' (Matthew 27:54; Mark 15:39).

An angel stops Abraham's knife and reveals a ram in the thicket, while on Golgotha the hammer falls on God's own Son in our place.
