The Book of the Law
The ancient scroll of Moses' Torah lost for decades in the temple storerooms under Manasseh and Amon — whose rediscovery by Hilkiah and reading by Shaphan tore open King Josiah's heart and ignited national revival.
Forgotten amid the rubble and idolatrous clutter of the Temple during fifty-seven years of apostasy, 'the Book of the Law of the LORD given through Moses' (particularly Deuteronomy's covenant blessings and warnings) was unearthed by High Priest Hilkiah during Josiah's eighteenth year (2 Kings 22:8; 2 Chronicles 34:14). Read aloud first to the king and then to every man, woman, and child in Jerusalem, the scroll sparked a nationwide covenant renewal (2 Kings 23:1–3).
