Jacob (Israel)
Son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham who wrestled with God at Peniel, received the covenant name Israel, and fathered the twelve tribes including Judah in the Messianic line.
Born grasping his twin brother Esau's heel (Genesis 25:26), Jacob beheld the stairway of angels at Bethel and wrestled with God by the Jabbok until daybreak, receiving the new name Israel ('He Strives with God,' Genesis 32:28). Through his twelve sons he became father of the twelve tribes of Israel and bestowed the royal scepter promise upon Judah (Genesis 49:10).
