The People of Israel
The covenant nation delivered from Egypt — who drank from the smitten Rock at Rephidim, trembled before the fire of Sinai, reaped Canaan's first grain at Gilgal, and fell on their faces on Mount Carmel crying, 'The LORD, He is God!'
Formed from the twelve sons of Jacob and delivered out of Egypt by the blood of the Passover lamb, the congregation of Israel embodies humanity's journey from bondage to maturity. At Rephidim, though parched and rebellious, they drank life-giving water from the smitten Rock (Exodus 17:1–7). At Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover, they trembled behind the boundary line at the thunder and fire of the Law (Exodus 19:16–18).
Forty years later, a new generation followed the Ark through the parted Jordan and put their sickles to the standing grain of Canaan on the day the manna ceased (Joshua 3; Joshua 5:10–12). Centuries later on Mount Carmel, when Elijah's prayer brought fire down upon the water-drenched altar, the wavering nation fell on their faces and shouted, 'The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!' (1 Kings 18:39).
