The Measuring Angel
The heavenly messenger at the opening of Revelation 11 who hands John a measuring rod like a staff and commands, 'Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there' — marking God's sanctuary as inviolable.
Echoing the man with a measuring line in Ezekiel 40:3 and Zechariah 2:1–2, the voice at the opening of Revelation 11 hands the Apostle John a measuring rod like a staff with the command: 'Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months' (Revelation 11:1–2). In biblical theology, to measure the inner sanctuary is to mark it as God's protected possession even while the outer court is trampled.
