The 450 Prophets of Baal
The 450 state-funded priests of Baal who ate at Jezebel's table and limped around their dry altar on Mount Carmel from morning till afternoon, cutting themselves with swords and lances until their blood gushed out — without a single spark from heaven.
Summoned to Mount Carmel by Elijah's challenge — ' the God who answers by fire, he is God' — the 450 prophets of Baal prepared their bull first and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, crying 'O Baal, answer us!' and limping around the altar (1 Kings 18:22–26). When Elijah mocked their silent idol at noon, they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out upon them, raving until the time of the evening offering while heaven remained utterly silent (1 Kings 18:27–29).
The Fire on the Water — The Fire on the Water
Elijah challenges 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel; after a 63-word prayer, the fire of the LORD falls on a water-soaked altar.
