Elijah the Prophet
The fiery Tishbite prophet whose name declares 'My God Is Yahweh' — who stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, soaked the altar with twelve jars of water, and called down the fire of the LORD with a 63-word prayer.
Bursting onto the stage of northern Israel during the apostate reign of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, Elijah the Tishbite shut the heavens for three and a half years (1 Kings 17:1). Summoning all Israel and 450 state-funded prophets of Baal to the windswept ridge of Mount Carmel, he challenged the wavering nation: 'How long will you go limping between two different opinions?' (1 Kings 18:21).
After Baal's prophets raved and cut themselves from morning until midday with no answer, Elijah rebuilt the ruined altar of the LORD with twelve stones, dug a trench, and ordered twelve heavy jars of precious water poured over the sacrifice and wood three times. At the time of the evening offering, his simple 63-word prayer brought the fire of the LORD down from heaven, consuming the bull, the wood, the stones, the dust, and the water in the trench (1 Kings 18:30–39). Before being taken to heaven in a whirlwind by chariots of fire, he cast his prophetic mantle upon Elisha (2 Kings 2:11–14).
