Crown Prince Jonathan
Fearless warrior prince of Israel and heir to Saul's throne — whose soul was knit to David's, stripping off his own royal robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt to celebrate his covenant brother's calling.
Already a legendary hero who had routed a Philistine garrison at Michmash with only his armor-bearer by declaring 'Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few' (1 Samuel 14:6), Crown Prince Jonathan watched young David step off the battlefield carrying Goliath's head. Instead of viewing David as a rival to his crown, 'the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul' (1 Samuel 18:1).
Cutting a blood covenant (Hebrew: Berith), Jonathan stripped off his royal robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt and placed them upon David — publicly surrendering his succession rights to honor God's anointing (1 Samuel 18:3–4). Even when King Saul hurled a spear at Jonathan in fury at the New Moon feast, Jonathan stood between his father's rage and David's life, weeping with David in the field and binding their households in steadfast love (Hesed) forever (1 Samuel 20:14–42).
