The 400 Outlaws of Adullam
The 400 men in distress, in debt, and bitter in soul who fled King Saul's broken kingdom into the Cave of Adullam — and whom David discipled into the legendary Mighty Men of Israel.
When David escaped from Gath to the limestone Cave of Adullam, 'everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men' (1 Samuel 22:1–2). Written off by Saul's palace as societal rejects, these 400 men were mentored by David in prayer, worship (Psalms 57 and 142), and battlefield discipline until they emerged in 2 Samuel 23 as the Mighty Men who established the kingdom.
